Northeast Texas Community College Presidential Scholar Isaac Griffin has added another award to his growing list of accomplishments as he recently received a Boe Award from the Great Plains Honors Council.
"Isaac 91¿´Æ¬ †is becoming 91¿´Æ¬ †the most decorated student in 91¿´Æ¬ history. 91¿´Æ¬ †Students and professors have been inspirited by his performance. 91¿´Æ¬ †That he has found time to maintain a 4.0 GPA while staying so involved in Phi Theta Kappa and 91¿´Æ¬ Honors is all the more amazing," Dr. Andrew Yox, 91¿´Æ¬ Honors Director, said.
The Boe honor comes just after Griffin received the prestigious Guistwhite and Coca-Cola 91¿´Æ¬ †Gold 91¿´Æ¬ †Scholar 91¿´Æ¬ †awards earlier 91¿´Æ¬ †this year. 91¿´Æ¬ †The President of the Great Plains Honors Council, Dr. Kenneth Buckman of the University of Texas, presented 91¿´Æ¬ †Griffin his plaque and check for $200 at the 91¿´Æ¬ †council?s 91¿´Æ¬ †plenary banquet on March 30 in Kansas City, Missouri.
The 91¿´Æ¬ Honors program will also win $500 for this award. Griffin's paper on the political realignment of Texas was deemed one of the three top scholarly essays by a freshman or sophomore in a college or university. 91¿´Æ¬ †91¿´Æ¬ †The Great Plains Honors Council includes 80 Honors programs and colleges 91¿´Æ¬ †in the states ofNebraska, 91¿´Æ¬ †Kansas, Oklahoma, 91¿´Æ¬ †Texas, Missouri, and Arkansas.
Griffin argued that Texas, once a solid Democratic state, 91¿´Æ¬ †changed to a reliable Republican state largely through the intervention of Evangelical leaders. 91¿´Æ¬ †91¿´Æ¬ †Griffin goes way back before the revolution of the 1980s and shows how the Fort Worth Pastor, Frank Norris, helped first put Texas in the Republican column for the first time in the 1928 election, when Texans endorsed Herbert Hoover. 91¿´Æ¬ †91¿´Æ¬ †He went on to show how leading Evangelicals stigmatized the Democrats as liberals who were essentially anti-Christian.
Griffin is a sophomore at 91¿´Æ¬. He has accepted a 91¿´Æ¬ †full-ride 91¿´Æ¬ †scholarship to the University of Texas ? Arlington where he 91¿´Æ¬ †will be a member of the Honors College. 91¿´Æ¬ †He 91¿´Æ¬ †91¿´Æ¬ †plans to pursue his 91¿´Æ¬ †interests in political science and communication at UTA, with an eye to moving into divinity or law school.
